Le Balto is a distinctive natural wine bar located in the heart of Kreuzberg, Berlin, which opened its doors in 2022. Kristina was commissioned to design their logo, with an unusual request from the clients: it had to feature a mermaid. This mermaid, the emblem of Warsaw, holds special significance for the female founders due to their strong connection to the city. Additionally, the mermaid is recognized as a powerful female symbol, representing birth and rebirth. The goal was to create a logo that exuded a powerful, ancient elegance with a handmade feel, while also maintaining a timeless quality by incorporating a classic bold typeface.
A few months later, Le Balto's Pét Nat bottles received their own labels, once again featuring the mermaid, this time in color. The surreal illustration depicts her harvesting grapes from the seabed, mirroring the wine's unique and sparkling nature. Available in two variants, rosé and white, the dreamy colors are enhanced by shimmering gold embossed letters and scales.
For over a decade, Kristina Wedel has operated her own studio in Berlin, serving as an art director, graphic designer, and illustrator. Throughout her extensive portfolio spanning branding, packaging, website design, editorial illustration, animation, and murals, a striking synergy between illustration and graphic design is evident. Vibrant, carefully selected colors intertwine with organic forms, creating a dynamic interplay between complexity and simplicity, often veering into the realm of surrealism.
When collaborating with clients, Kristina's aim is to visually encapsulate the essence of their ideas and core messages, maintaining a friendly demeanor and keen attentiveness throughout the process. While she undertakes larger commissions, she also dedicates ample time and space to smaller clients, along with organizing exhibitions and events through The Boys Club, a design collective she co-founded. Furthermore, she actively engages in socially impactful endeavors like Doggo Donate, a Non profit fundraiser for dog rescue organizations.
Primarily catering to clients in the food, music, and cultural spheres, Kristina Wedel's work stands as a testament to her versatility and dedication within the realm of visual communication.
