Introducing Lock: A Versatile Typeface Family Blending Tradition and Modernity

After over two years of development, CoType Foundry is excited to present Lock, a comprehensive type family created by Mark Bloom and Diana Ovezea. The family consists of four distinct subfamilies — Serif, Serif Stencil, Sans, and Sans Stencil — each available in six weights and offering alternate glyphs, arrows, and other features.

Inspired by the fluidity of calligraphic strokes, the letterforms have been meticulously designed to achieve a flexible and contemporary humanist style. The Serif variant is bold and expressive, while the Sans is more minimal and subdued, with each style paired with a playful stencil counterpart for a complete and cohesive set.

When Mark asked if I’d be interested in designing the type specimen for CoType’s latest release, I was instantly thrilled. It was one of those rare moments where passion and opportunity aligned perfectly, and I couldn’t wait to get started.⁠

The words “type” and “specimen” sparked an exploration into type classification systems. What makes Lock truly unique is its pairing of serif and sans serif—enhanced by striking stencils—all within a single type family. Each style complements the others, yet stands strong on its own. This contrast led us to the concept of taxonomy, the science of classifying the natural world, and it became the foundation for our design. Using a taxonomic framework, we were able to showcase Lock’s rich typographic ecosystem, weaving together content that told a story across⁠ multiple pages.⁠
