"The Village Fool of Salmaritin" is an exploration of societal norms and deviance, developed by artist William Denis in collaboration with La "S" Grand Atelier between 2023 and 2024. This project intertwines fiction and reality, creating Salmaritin, a fictional village reflecting the artistic and human exchanges within the workshop.
La "S" Grand Atelier, a center for Art Brut in Vielsalm, hosted William Denis as he collaborated with artists, developing Salmaritin as a space where each participant assumed a role—be it circus director, prima ballerina, or café-goer. The village transcends traditional boundaries, showcasing pure artistic expression.
William played the role of the fool—an outsider navigating the social norms of this artistic microcosm. In the narrative, he is an escaped psychiatric patient, highlighting the complex relationship between the artists and institutionalization. The final installation was a playground-like space, contrasted by a stark hospital structure atop a hill, symbolizing societal constraints.
The project’s publication merges the fictional village with William’ real-life encounters at La "S." Through portraits, drawings, and collages, it illustrates how artistic collaboration transcends language and societal barriers. The work becomes a celebration of deviance, redefining communication through art.
Influenced by institutional psychotherapy—a movement opposing psychiatric confinement—Salmaritin questions how society engages with deviance. Psychiatrist Jean Oury emphasized community as essential to healing, a theme reflected in this artistic journey.
The book features insights from: Anne-Françoise Rouche, director of La "S" Grand Atelier. Baptiste Brun, historian of Art Brut and Contemporary Art. Grégory Jérome, expert in institutional psychotherapy.
"The Village Fool of Salmaritin" is a testament to art’s power to challenge norms and foster understanding. William Denis, a London-Brussels-based artist, continues to push creative boundaries, proving that art is not just expression but a means of connection and transformation.
